March Newsletter: What if 2023 is all about getting to know yourself ..

As we move into 2023, many of us may be seeking ways to get to know ourselves better. Sometimes, it takes a new experience or meeting someone new to help us discover something about ourselves that we never knew before.

For example, while on a trip to Texel, my hubby and I stumbled upon the Jacob shell around the church in Hoorn and learned that we could walk the Camino to Santiago de Compostela from this northernmost point in the Netherlands. We set out on the path and found ourselves lost at one point. When we asked ‘Texelaars’ for directions, we were surprised to learn that they were not aware that the Camino now departed from their village. It made us reflect on the idea that we can learn so much about our own environments and ourselves through the perspectives of others.

Similarly, I recently had a conversation with a friend who was on a journey of self-discovery. She shared that understanding oneself better is important in being able to understand others. And we can also learn more about ourselves through others. In fact, I have a coaching exercise that I’d like to share with you called “Getting to know myself by knowing my hero.”
