Aruba Peace Labyrinth

Since September 21, 2005 the Aruba Peace Labyrinth behind the Chapel of Alto Vista is walked by many, daily to find moments of peace and reflection.

The Aruba Peace Labyrinth was modified in 2007 by volunteers. Photo by Valentijn.

Some walk the labyrinth to relax, others when a loved one has died, or when they need to make a major decision, or when they are in love. There are countless people and reasons for walking the labyrinth. If you sit on the benches at the labyrinth you notice how magical it really is. The labyrinth takes all our experiences and life stories and gives back to its walkers what they need.

Read here a labyrinth story.

The History

The Aruba Peace Labyrinth was modeled after the Chartres Labyrinth and built by a group of volunteers using stones from around the Chapel of Alto Vista in Aruba. The paths are filled with white sand making it quite typical of Aruba. It has 11 circles and a rosette in the center.

On a full moon evening, Sunday, September 18th, 2005, residents of Aruba walked the Labyrinth for the first time. Every year since then, on September 21 of each year, residents continued to walk the labyrinth together to celebrate the International Day of Peace. The beauty of the labyrinth is that you can walk it any time of the day and that it has such a beautiful location, overlooking the ocean.

Today, modern ‘pilgrims’ walk the labyrinthine path to further their prayer, for reflection, meditation and spiritual and personal growth. Walking the labyrinth is popular with many because of its simplicity and the freedom to walk the path on their own terms. There is no right way to walk a labyrinth, all the ways are correct. You just follow the path and depending on the circumstance, it may be joyous, sad or meditative. Often the labyrinth reflects back our inner wisdom. The winding path is often mind-expanding, encouraging and empowering.
